Selecting the appropriate motor and gearbox configuration is critical for application longevity. For high-torque applications where spatial geometry is tight and self-locking is required, worm gearboxes are often chosen. The 90-degree transmission allows for space savings, and the high single-stage gear reduction provides high holding torque. This is particularly useful in automatic gates, heavy valves, and heavy-duty locking systems.
Conversely, spur gearboxes offer superior transmission efficiency, usually between 80% to 95% per stage, compared to worm gearboxes which can drop to 50% due to sliding friction. Spur configurations are ideal for high-speed, continuous-duty cycles such as smart camera wipers, dispensing pumps, and educational robotics.
